William Joseph Ross, 87, of Scipio, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at his home in Scipio surrounded by his family.
Born March 18, 1939, in Indianapolis, he was the son of the late Roy and Jewell (Riff) Ross. He married Kathryn Louise Gruhl in 1967; she preceded him in death on July 7, 2017.
William served in the United States Army from 1959-1962 where he served as a paratrooper. He worked in facility maintenance for Cummins Engine Company for 30 years before retiring in 1993 and after retiring he worked in construction. William was a lifetime member of the NRA, Fish Creek Long Rifles, and Cloud Busters Skydiving Club which he founded. He enjoyed teaching skydiving, working on old cars, and shooting at Friendship.
He is survived by his sons, Pat (Deanna) Ross of Vernon, Brett (Michele) Ross of North Vernon, and Brian (Jennifer) Ross of Columbus; and grandchildren, Brandy Ross of Greenwood, Aaron (Heather) Jackson of Alabama, Patricia Ross of Massachusetts, Jody (Tonya) Ross of Vernon, Michelle (Jeff) Miller, of Columbus, Kayla Ross of Bloomfield, Chasity (Kyle) Gould of Columbus, Shandi (Logan) Allen of Columbus, Patrick (Ashley) Easter of Scipio, and Kassandra Ross of Columbus, and eighteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Mike Ross; sister, Janice Olds; and grandson, Joseph Ross.
In keeping with his and his family’s wishes cremation is planned with private family services to be held at a later date. Burial will be in the Scipio Cemetery.
Memorials may be made in honor of William through the funeral home to Gentiva Hospice in Jeffersonville.
