Virginia Frances Sweany, 76, of North Vernon, passed away at 2:25 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born December 16, 1949, in North Vernon, she was the daughter of the late Omar Scott and Deloris Faye (Hartwell) Lockhard. She married Patrick R. Sweany I, on November 22, 1968, in North Vernon; he survives.
Virginia attend North Vernon High School and was a housewife who enjoyed cleaning, housekeeping, genealogy, crocheting, and her Bible her favorite verse is Psalms 91. She loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Patrick Sweany I of North Vernon; son Patrick R. Sweeny II, of North Vernon; daughters, Shanna (Rick Wilson Jr.) Wilson, Melinda M. Engelking, and Carol (Charles Arthur Jr.) Sweany, all of North Vernon; brother, Ronnie (Kathy) Lockhard of North Vernon; grandchildren, Ryan (Kristin) Sweany, Shelby Shepherd, Lacey Hall, Hanna (Thomas) Aumann, James R. (Mikayla) Engelking, Jonathon (Tonya) Wilson, Elijah Wilson, Cassidy Wilson, and Abram Wilson, all of North Vernon, Kelsie Ashpaugh of Rutledge, Tennessee, and Myleigh Munn of Columbus; and nineteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law, Jimmy Engelking; brother, Kenneth Lockhard, sisters, Helen M. Love, Marjorie E. Hoyt and Janice Grapevine; grandson, Joshua D. Engelking; and great-grandson, Scott T. Aumann.
A funeral service for Virginia will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with the Rev. Dale Boyd officiating. The visitation for family and friends will be on Wednesday, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in the Baldwin Cemetery in Vernon.
