Ronald Edgar “Ron” Cross, 78, of North Vernon, passed away at 11:40 a.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born December 25, 1944, in Seymour, he was the son of the late Jack and Violet (Smedley) Cross. He married Marlene (Ping) Cross on April 7, 1968, at Sandcreek-Azalia Friends Church in Azalia; she survives.
Ron graduated from North Vernon High School in 1962. He was a reserve for the U.S. Air Force. Ron was called to active duty to serve in the 71st S.O.S. Squadron during the Vietnam War, and he worked as an airplane mechanic/service manager at Bakalar Airports in Columbus in 1968. He owned and operated Ron’s Auto in North Vernon and had previously worked as a mechanic at Midway Motors and Don Miller Ford. He was a Server and Elder for the Jennings Church of Christ. Ron loved working on cars, spending time with his family and friends, and traveling to Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Israel.
Through his life experiences Ron accumulated a war chest of memories. And if you were fortunate enough to know him, he loved to share stories of those experiences! He had an incredible memory!
Surviving with his wife is his son, Ryan (Crystol) Cross of North Vernon; daughters, Teresa (Rick) Cravens of Edinburgh and Jaime (Eric) Stellato of North Vernon; brother, Robert “Bob” (Barb) Cross of Scipio; grandchildren, Eric (Jackie) Cravens, Emily Cravens, Brooke Cravens, Kelsey (Alex) Wallace, Kennedy Cross, Aubrey Stellato, and Leighton Stellato; and great grandchildren, Natalia Cravens and Parker Wallace.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kenneth Ronald Cross; grandchild, Mackenzie Faith Cross; and mother and father in-law, Margaret and Logan Ping.
A funeral service for Ron will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 30, 2023, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon with Rev. Marcus Speer officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, October 29, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and one hour before the service on Monday. Burial will follow at the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon with military graveside rites by members of Matt Hester Post #2021.
Memorial donations may be made in honor of Ron through the funeral home to the Jennings Church of Christ or to Operation Christmas Child – Samaritans Purse.
