Lewis G. Haines, 85, of North Vernon, passed away at 2:57 a.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at Majestic Care of North Vernon.
Born October 29, 1940, at home in North Vernon, he was the son of the late Gurdon and Clara Mae (Brougher) Haines. He married Vonna Dixon on June 14, 1968, in Brooksburg; she survives.
Lewis was a member of the last class to graduate from Hayden High School in 1959 and was a lifelong farmer. He attended Hayden Baptist Church. Lewis enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching IU Football and Basketball, and the Cincinnati Reds. He was a professional teaser and loved teasing his grandsons and watching their sports games. Most of all Lewis loved spending time with his family.
Surviving with his wife, Vonna; is his son, Curtis (Rachel) Haines of North Vernon; grandsons, Adam Haines and Clark Haines, both of North Vernon; sisters-in-laws, Etta (Calvin) Royse of North Vernon, Carol Altepeter of Seymour, Evelyn Rose of East Enterprise and Diane Dixon of Lexington; and several nieces, nephew, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mark Haines; and brother, Lee Haines.
The funeral service for Lewis will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 28, 2026, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with Rev. Lewis Wright officiating. The visitation for family and friends will be from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, and one hour prior to the service on Monday. Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in North Vernon.
Memorials may be made in honor of Lewis through the funeral home to Hayden Baptist Church or donors’ choice of organization.
