Leona Mae Hess

Leona Mae Hess, 76, of North Vernon, passed away at 9:37 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Majestic Care of North Vernon.

Born March 5, 1950, in North Vernon, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Gwendolyn (Mason) Hess.

Leona was a 1968 graduate of North Vernon High School and went on to earn an LPN degree. She worked as an LPN for several hospitals and nursing homes. Leona was a former member of the North Vernon Church of the Nazarene and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in North Vernon. She enjoyed spending time and playing with her cats.

Leona is survived by her sister, Mary Hess of North Vernon; her niece, Ruth Ann of Columbus; two great nieces; and one great-great-niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Virginia Simmons.

A funeral service for Leona will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon. The visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at a later date in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.
