Lawrence "Leck" Duncan Obituary

Lawrence “Leck” Duncan, 88 years old of Hampstead, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his son's (Leslie and Becky) home where he lived, on August 14, 2026.

He was born May 14, 1938, in Stearns, Kentucky, he was the son of Everett and Lina Bell Duncan.

He graduated from Pine Knott High School where he went to school with his beloved wife, the love of his life, Bertha Callahan Duncan, his wife of 56 years. She preceded him in death in June of 2025. He joined the Navy after high school where he served on the USS
Corry DD-817 from 1955 to 1959.

He worked as a maintenance man for a private company in Cincinnati, Ohio before joining Kentucky Fried Chicken Co. working in maintenance in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana for 40 plus years. He met Colonel Sanders, which he was very proud of, he was a very hard worker all of his life, a jack of all trades. He enjoyed his pets, Buddy and Sissy, gardening, fishing, hunting, sudoku, and playing rook with his wife. He loved spending time with his grandsons, Shawn, Toby, and Lil Shawn; and Mike and Trey Gilpin, and Jamie Lovegrove whom he thought of as his grandsons.

Surviving are his children, Elaine (Carl) Shepherd of Butlerville, Leslie (Becky) Duncan of Hampstead, North Carolina; Diane Coleman of Westport, Kenny Walker of Indianapolis, and David Walker of Sommerset, Kentucky; grandchildren, Shawn (Lisa) Harris of Butlerville, Chad (Kyle) Harris of Boston, Massachusetts, Nathan Duncan of Huntsville, Alabama, Bethany Duncan studying at LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Michelle and Chris Walker of Greenwood, Adam Coleman of Westport; great-grandsons, Toby Harris of North Vernon, Jordan Gray of Butlerville, and  Dustin (Kat) Gray of Freetown; and great-great-grandchildren, Shawn A. Harris of North Vernon, Arydessa and Lindol Gray of Columbus, Zoie, Devin, Lincoln and Willow Gray, all of Freetown; and several nieces and nephews  

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha; one son, Everett; his parents; two sisters, seven brothers, one of which was his twin (Deck) whose wife Polly survives; and several sisters-in-law.  

A graveside service for Leck will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026, in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon with Toby Harris officiating. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon.

Memorials may be made in honor of Leck through the funeral home to Mercy Rescue and Adoption Inc.
