George Thomas Johnson Sr.

George Thomas Johnson Sr., age 79, of North Vernon, Indiana, stepped into heaven on Friday, August 21, 2026. He was born on January 18, 1947, in Seymour, Indiana, to Charles Roscoe “Doodle” Johnson Jr. and Shirley Marie (Burke) Johnson.

Raised in Seymour, George attended St. Ambrose Catholic School and Seymour High School. He married Lillian Ann Warnell, and together they shared 52 years of marriage and built a life centered on family, faith, and service. He was a devoted husband, father, granddaddy/papaw, brother, and friend.

George had a 35-year career at Cummins Engine Company. He later returned to school, where he studied theology. After retiring from Cummins, he served as a pastor in the local church.

George was a God-fearing man devoted to prayer. Sharing his Christian faith with family, friends, and neighbors was among his greatest passions. He was deeply committed to mentoring others and shepherding hearts, especially the hearts of his seven grandchildren. He invested in children and families through his church, and The Master’s Club was one of his favorite ministries. His commitment to the next generation was also reflected in his strong support of Christian education.

George’s life verse was drawn from Psalm 31:1–3. These words remained a source of comfort and strength to him, even when he was terribly weak:

 “In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.

Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defense to save me.

For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me.” —Psalm 31:1–3 (KJV)

 George cared deeply for people and remained steadfastly devoted to those he held dear. Family traditions and shared memories held a special place in his heart. His reverence for Scripture and his love for God were unwavering. His love of country, nurtured in part by his interest in history, was evident throughout his life. His storytelling ability endeared him to people of all ages.

He was well known for his tasty recipes and home cooking. George valued farm-to-table food and canned the harvest so it could be served throughout the year. His wide-ranging interests reflected his adventurous spirit and included gardening, fishing, watching Westerns, and spending time in the woods. George loved wildlife and hunted a variety of wild game, including bear in Canada, deer, and turkeys.

A gifted artisan, George expressed his creativity through painting, drawing, crafting handmade leather goods, and designing and building a wide variety of original creations, including pieces made from wood.

His life was a personal testimony to God’s grace and goodness, reflected in his kindness, gentle spirit, generosity, strength, and wisdom.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Johnson; his parents, Charles and Shirley (Burke) Johnson; his sister, Donna Brannan; his brother, Mark Johnson; and his beloved aunt, JoAnn Matthews.

George is survived by his two children and their families. His son, Tom Johnson (Jennifer), resides in the local area with their children, Zack LaCroix, Laurel Johnson (Brendon Schoenherr), and Jobeth Johnson (Aiden Huffman). He is also survived by his daughter, Malissa Smitha (Matt), of Vestavia, Alabama, and their children, Luke Smitha, Taylor Smitha, Tucker Smitha, and Blake Smitha.

Also surviving are his two brothers, John Johnson and Steve Johnson, both of Seymour, Indiana, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Dupont Baptist Church, located at 6824 W. South Street in Dupont, Indiana. A special time for family visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Public visitation will follow from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with the funeral service beginning immediately afterward. Burial will follow at Hulse Cemetery in Scipio, Indiana.

In keeping with George’s gift of hospitality and his love of family celebrations, friends and relatives are invited to share a meal at the church following the burial service. Gathering around the table with family and friends will be a meaningful way to honor one of his greatest loves.

Reflecting George’s strong commitment to Christian education, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Dupont Baptist Academy to support a scholarship fund in his honor.

The family extends its heartfelt thanks to George’s friends, relatives, medical professionals, and everyone who so graciously demonstrated loving-kindness to George and his family. Every act of love, care, prayer, and support offered during this time is deeply treasured.

Above all, George leaves behind a lasting legacy of faith, evidenced by a life grounded in prayer, humility, love, wisdom, strength, and devoted service to Christ and others. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
